Welcome to my thesis defense on June 15!

Dear readers, today my PhD thesis, entitled Escalation: Explorative studies of high-risk situations from the theoretical perspectives of complexity and joint cognitive systems, was sent to the printing shop! That means that it is about time to officially announce the date for the public defense:

Welcome to the public defense seminar which will be held on June 15, 2012, at 10:15 in lecture hall V:B at the V-building (address: John Ericssons väg 1) on the campus of the technical faculty at Lund University. The invited faculty opponent is Professor Erik Hollnagel.

The defense procedure here in Sweden is such that the student first get to present the thesis for about 20-30 minutes. Then the opponent takes charge of the discussion and asks the students difficult questions for about one hour. After that the word is handed over to the decision committee (three senior researchers and those who make the final decision whether to pass or fail the student) who also get to ask their questions. Finally the audience is allowed to ask any questions that they might have.

Once the public defense session is closed the decision committee gathers together with the supervisors and opponent to discuss the thesis in private and make the decision whether to pass or fail. In the meantime the audience gather together with the student in a tiny stairwell and corridor. After what might seem like an eternity, the decision committee come out to the audience to announce their decision. Once that is done everyone is invited for lunch :)

However June 15 does not end with lunch. In fact we are planning to, once the lunch is finished, have another seminar, or a workshop rather. I am happy to invite you to participate in a one-hour workshop in which you as a participant get to ask your questions to some of the most prominent researchers within the fields of Systems Safety and Risk Management: the professors Sidney Dekker, Britt-Marie Drottz Sjöberg, Inge Svedung and Kurt Petersen. The discussion theme will be “The Risk Management and Systems Safety research 2020; where are we heading?”

That is it for now. The formal invitation will be sent out in the first half of May. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further details about June 15.

Feels good to leave the thesis aside for a while. Tomorrow I am leaving Sweden for Brazil! Going there to do some teaching for a week together with my dear friend Eder Henriqson. And have some barbecues... :)
